Madeira is a type of fortified wine originating from the Madeira Islands of Portugal. The unique production process involves heating the wine and deliberately exposing it to some levels of oxidation, which gives Madeira its characteristic flavor and longevity.

The Henriques & Henriques (H&H) name is a reputable one in the Madeira wine industry, known for producing high-quality wines. The label "Special Medium Dry" indicates the sweetness level of this particular Madeira, which is an essential characteristic denoting its taste profile.

The IVM 'Selo' stamp is a certification mark from the Instituto da Vinha e do Vinho, which was a governing body overseeing the quality and authenticity of Portuguese wines. The stamp ensures that the wine met certain standards and was bottled after 1979, which was a significant year for wine regulation in Portugal.

The stencil marking of 1949 on the bottle indicates the year the grapes were harvested, which is significant as it hints at the long aging process this wine underwent, a typical characteristic of high-quality Madeira wines. The aging process, spanning over three decades before bottling in the early 1980s, contributes to the rich and complex flavors that Madeira wines are celebrated for.
